Hey, We are getting info from Firefighters in Texas of a major fertilizer plant fire and explosion that occurred in the town of West, which is 20 miles north of Waco, in McLennan County. We have been advised that West Firefighters were initially dispatched to the plant earlier in the evening after an earlier fire rekindled. The explosion was reported at around 1950 hours in an urgent radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35. Residents 60+ miles away reported hearing the explosion. Naturally, the concern is that the Firefighters were operating on the scene at the time of the explosion. Right now, reports are that several buildings are on fire, destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged. There are also reports that people were trapped in the nursing home as well as in an apartment building.

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) announced today a provisional total of 83 on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States as a result of incidents that occurred in 2012, the same number of firefighter losses as in 2011. The report is linked below. The 83 fatalities were spread across 34 states. Pennsylvania and North Carolina experienced the highest number of fatalities with 9 firefighter deaths each. New York had 6 firefighter deaths, including the most recent tragic shooting deaths of two firefighters in Webster. California and Texas, each with 5 firefighter deaths, were the only other states with 5 or more firefighter fatalities in 2012.

HOW WE DIED: =Heart attacks or stroke were responsible for the deaths of 41 firefighters (49%) in 2012. This single year total is a near average proportion of firefighter deaths from heart attack or stroke over recent years. This nature of fatal injury has remained relatively constant, while others, on average, have been reduced during the past decade. =Eleven on-duty firefighters died in association with wildland fires, the same as 2011 and 2010. AND NOW, READ THIS: The single cause of injury seeing more than a four-fold increase in firefighter deaths during 2012 was vehicle collisions (including aircraft), with 18 deaths. These 2012 firefighter fatality statistics are provisional and will likely change somewhat as the USFA contacts state fire marshals to verify the names of firefighters reported to have died on duty during 2012. The final number of firefighter fatalities will be reported in USFA's annual firefighter fatality report, expected to be available by July. HERE IS THE PROVISIONAL REPORT: http://apps.usfa.fema.gov/firefighter-fatalities/fatalityData/incidentDataReport?idrYearStart=2012&idrYearEnd=2012

WHAT ARE YOU SO STRESSED ABOUT? Looking for a low-stress job? Being a full-time university professor is the least stressful career for 2013, according to jobs site CareerCast.com. Yep-thats what we'll do. Of course, it's the first time that career has won the title of least stressful in the site's 20-year history of assessing jobs. "Professors are kings of their kingdoms," said Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast.com and JobsRated.com. "They tell students what they must do." Hmmm. Sounds slightly familiar. Their criteria included 11 stress factors like travel, job outlook, deadlines, working in the public eye, competitiveness, physical demands, environmental conditions, hazards encountered, own life at risk, life of another at risk, and meeting the public. Lee said the least stressful careers tend to entail positive feedback from people on a regular basis. In those cases, people are working are generally pleased, he said. "The most stressful list tends to be opposite," he said. The silver lining is that the more stressful a job is, the higher the likelihood you'll get paid more, said Lee. The logic follows somewhat that military enlisted personnel and military generals are the first and second most stressful careers, with median salaries of $45,528 and $196,000. Being a firefighter, which was the second most stressful job last year, was ranked as the third most stressful career in the current survey. Lee concedes that what may is stressful for one person may not affect another person. "You can argue a firefighter is not stressed if they relish adrenaline and rushing into a burning building," he said. "But using analytical data, most people would say rushing into a burning building is stressful."

An East Texas volunteer Firefighter is critical after being involved in a one-vehicle accident Friday night. 3 members of the Jackson Heights Volunteer Fire department, were involved in a one vehicle rollover Friday night as they were responding to the call of an accident in the area. They were on their way to their firehouse in a personal vehicle when the accident happened. 20-year-old Jalen Smith, 21-year-old Cornelius Redwine, and 18-year-old Gary Robinson, all of Tyler, were in the vehicle when it rolled over multiple times off of FM 2767 near County Road 387. The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver had to take evasive action and the car then rolled several times. All three men were taken to ETMC Tyler Friday night. Cornelius Redwine and Gary Robinson were treated and released Friday night, and Jalen Smith was last listed in critical condition. We'll keep you updated-keep'm in your prayers.

We are about a month away from the Central Texas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & Golf Tournament. This is the Texas Firewalkers big fundraising event of the year and we need your support. Texas Firewalkers provides immediate assitance to those who lose their homes to residential fires at the request of the local Incident Command on scene. Texas Firewalkers has touched families in counties in and around Central Texas. We also raise money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation at this event as well.... Please pass this along and help make this event another success. We need your support to support families in need....

Incident: Structure Fire

Time: 0315

Texas Firewalkers had been alerted by Bastrop County ESD #1 on Wednesday morning that they had a citizen of their community in need. Texas Firewalkers arrived at the address around 1530 hrs off of FM 20 and met with the home owner. From the first look, the exterior and interior of his home was a complete loss with heavy fire damage to 50% of the home with additional heavy smoke and water damage. The homeowner did not have home owners’ insurance so the need for our support was extreme. After speaking to the home owner and finding what his immediate needs were, Texas Firewalkers were able to write a check for $100 to assist the homeowner with his immediate needs.

To make a donation to this homeowner, please contact me. We have an account setup at Roscoe State Bank for donations. Thank you for your support. This is what Texas Firewalkers is all about.

We are already looking for sponsors for our charity event. I created Texas Firewalkers in 2008 as a safety net for Central Texas families affected by fire. Several years ago I was personally affected after losing everything I owned to a house fire. Although I was grateful to be alive, having basic necessities such as shelter, food and toiletries at my disposal would have made the days following the loss of my home far less grievous.

Unfortunately as humans we cannot prevent natural causes from occurring, however, as a non-profit organization, together with your help we can absolutely help relieve our community's fire victims of some of the initial emotional and physical trauma afflicted upon them as a result of home fires right here in Texas, the state we call home.

Throughout 2012 our volunteers will spend countless hours planning and implementing events to raise funds so that we may continue touching lives. Currently we are very excited to announce our very first charity Central Texas 9/11 Memorial Golf Tournament which will be held at Star Ranch Friday, September 7, 2012, in Hutto, Texas. We will also be hosting Central Texas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, in Austin, Texas on Saturday September 8th for the second year! Both days we will raise money for the Texas Firewalkers organization all while remembering the 343 FDNY firefighters that lost their lives on 09/11/2001 in the World Trade Center Tragedy. Funds raised from this weekend will also be donated to the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation that helps firefighter families whenever in need at the time of a lost loved firefighter. Imagine for a moment your company's name displayed throughout the venue, on the web, in print and on the radio of an event such as this one. This is where people of all sorts can come together and play hard to help benefit a superior cause. We ask that you please consider a contribution to our upcoming event. Today we are asking for your much needed assistance in making Texas Firewalkers a continued safe-haven for Texas families who suddenly and painfully lose everything they identify with to fire. I have attached the sponsor package and agreement for both weekend events. Please forward this on to others that might be interested.

Thank you in advance for your sincere consideration.

This "small" single family dwelling fire happened last month. The fire had burned through the first floor and immediately collapsed when St. Paul Firefighters made their way through the front door. One Firefighter fell through the floor but managed to spread his arms across the hole which kept him from falling into the basement below which was fully engulfed in flames. But, as he dangled just a few feet above the flames he received third degree burns on his legs and back. The FF's pulled their Brother FFJeff Black out and saved his life. If the rest of the floor had given way, the outcome could have been much worse for Black and the other firefighters. FF Black was just released from the hospital where he received several skin grafts and is not yet back to work.

NOTE:

-The size of the house-don't let it fool you.

-Their training that kicked in by all involved. Training.

-The rapid response and availability (staffing) of other FF's to secure and rescue him.

-EMS on the scene when it happened-ready for service.

Situational awareness applies before the bad stuff happens-but also when and after it happens ...and it played out well here-resulting in a FF's life saved.

HERE IS THE VIDEO AND AUDIO: http://kstp.com/news/stories/S2480776.shtml?cat=1

Typical mop-up work after a fire changed in an instant for West Point (Indiana) Fire Chief Gary Cheesman. "The instant it happened, 'oh my goodness, I just lost an eye for a vacant house'," Cheesman said. The fire with suspicious origins broke out January 23 near Attica. West Point Volunteer Firefighters fought the fire from the outside because it was vacant. Chief Cheesman said the house had hundreds of rounds of ammunition inside. Firefighters had heard bullets explode as they worked the fire, but thought none of the possible projectiles were traveling beyond the structure. The fire was knocked down and he had walked to the back of the house to discuss what firefighters should do next. Because he was running the pumper and was wearing a radio headset around his head, he wasn't wearing his helmet. That's when it happened. "There was a bang that went off," Cheesman said. "It felt like someone punched me." A primer cap from a .223 caliber bullet entered in the corner of his eye by his nose and lodged behind the eyeball. "I thought I lost it," Cheesman said. "I thought 'this old house, that's worth nothing, and I lose an eye over it'." Anywhere else on his face and doctors think he would have had just a scratch. Paramedics rushed Chief Cheesman to the hospital. Surgery last week has helped improve the Chiefs vision as it's getting better, but it's still blurry. Doc's told the Chief they are hopeful his vision will clear completely in 4 to 8 weeks and he'll be back on the job. Chief Cheesman said he's been overwhelmed by the response sincerity fighters and friends since January 23. He hopes his story serves as a reminder to everyone who work in potentially dangerous situations, to always wear all of your protective gear-including eye protection.

I just wanted to let you know that the critical response team of the Texas Firewalkers responded to a house on Hwy 40 in Bastrop on Saturday morning after an early structure fire at the residence. We got on scene about 9 am to the location. I made contact with the home owner by phone while on scene to see what the family needed. After our conversation via phone, I made arrangements with the Best Western-Bastrop for a two night stay. We also gave the family $40 in cash for food and other needed items and purchased the family of three a $60 Wal-Mart gift card so they could get the necessities they need after their time of loss. The Texas Firewalkers goal to successful of reaching the public with support after residential fires has once again been met. We are continuing to work with the family on their immediate needs.

Thanks again for your generous support of the Texas Firewalkers. Your donations and time makes our organization a success for the residents of the Central Texas area.

Registration for the Central Texas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will open in late March. Texas Firewalkers will also host the Bentwood Chilifest on April 14th in Georgetown . Get your favorite chili recipe and bring it on. This will be a sanctioned CASI Chili cook off. Thanks again for your support....

UPDATE: FIREFIGHTERS BURNED: GAS LEAK RESPONSE EXPLODES

Both Firefighters are doing better today (with one home and the other soon to be discharged) after that gas leak turned explosion in Rockland County's West Haverstraw. The gas main was broken by a contracting crew doing work on the street for Verizon. Workers were using a pneumatic tool that shoots a metal device known as a bullet through the earth under the street.

However, "the bullet" slammed into a gas main and the leaking gas filled the area, buildings and storm drains.

Injuries to the FF's include concussion, broken bones and some second degree burns... and in communicating one of the FF's involved: THEIR PPE PROTECTED THEM FROM MUCH WORSE. As stated by the Chief: "IT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE IF WE HADN'T STARTED EVACUATION IMMEDIATELY UPON ARRIVAL". The FF's were at the front door of the dwelling when it blew and "a pressure" hit them, described like a football "tackle" that lifted them up and tossed them 30 feet away....and then realizing what happened, they looked up and saw the debris and situation.

SAME TOWN-SAME FD-SAME FF: PREVIOUS CLOSE CALL:

It was almost exactly a year ago, and you may recognize the name Captain Kenny Patterson, who had a very serious CLOSE CALL at a fire not far from the scene of yesterday's gas explosion that we posted on FFCC. His department responded to a dwelling fire on Jan. 14, 2011. What he and the crews didn't know when they entered the structure was that the house had been illegally converted into a mess of subdivided rooms. Patterson, 48, became disoriented in the smoke-filled house and ran out of air. His TRAINING KICKED IN and he issued a mayday call as he collapsed in the building. Andrew Kolesar, another Firefighter, found Patterson in the building, swung him over his shoulder and carried him out. Patterson was treated at Westchester Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

Now a year and a few days later, Patterson is one of the 2 Firefighters being treated after being injured in the gas explosion. We'll have more details as they become available as Chief George Zayas and his crew along with both FF/Instructor Jerry Knapp (many of you have probably attended Jerry's outstanding training sessions at FDIC, if the name sounds familiar) and Captain Kenny Patterson recover from yesterdays incident.

=ARTICLE: BUFFALO NY FIREFIGHTERS KILLED IN GAS EXPLOSION

On the evening of December 27,1983 a warehouse was the scene of the worst disaster and Firefighter LODD loss of life in the history of the Buffalo NYFD. The warehouse had contained an illegal 500 gallon propane tank whose valve was broken off while it was moved and the building was in the process of being evacuated. The propane gas started to leak, eventually reaching an open flame. The tank exploded, killing all 5 firefighters assigned to Ladder 5 and 2 civilians; it also damaged a dozen city blocks and caused millions of dollars of damage in fire equipment.

BFD members Mike Austin, Mickey Catanzaro, Red Lickfeld, Tony Waszkielewicz, and Matty Colpoys were killed in the line of Duty instantly. The 3 engines, 2 trucks, rescue and 3rd Battalion were responding to that report of the large propane tank leaking in the building. Engine 32 arrived and reported nothing showing, but they were talking to some workmen from the four-story, heavy-timber warehouse (approx. 50' x 100'). Truck 5, Engine 1 and BC Harvey Supple (who was critically injured) arrived right behind E-32.

37 seconds after the chief announced his arrival, there was a tremendous explosion. It completely leveled the 4 story building and it demolished many buildings on four different blocks. It seriously damaged buildings that were over a half a mile away. The ensuing fireball started buildings burning on a number of streets. A large gothic church on the next block had a huge section ripped out of it. For an excellent article on this tragic fire by then new firefighter-and now former BFD Fire Commissioner, Chief Mike Lombardo, go to:

BURNED/INJURED-Rockland County, New York
Leaking gas from a ruptured line blew a townhouse up into a pile of rubble today, causing a gas fed fire and leading to the evacuation of more than 100 homes and the transport at least two seriously injured West Haverstraw firefighters to the Westchester County Medical Center.
INITIAL REPORT:
A Verizon work crew ruptured the gas main around 1210 hours but how much had leaked and where was unknown. West Haverstraw Firefighters responded and were at the door of the townhouse on Zarriello Lane off Route 9W when the explosion occurred at 1237 hours, injuring at least 2 Firefighters seriously and two workers for Orange and Rockland Utilities.
EMS took the firefighters to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, rather than wait for the medical helicopter as both Firefighters suffered burns, and one was thrown about 25 feet by the force of the explosion. We'll post more later either or and/or on our home page.

GAS LEAK RESPONSE & REMINDERS:
While the cause, actions and operations of what happened this morning are certainly not yet known, this is yet another reminder of how GAS LEAKS-runs that we all respond to daily, can turn ugly.

Texas Communities Face New Wildfire Threats

Release Date: January 12, 2012
Release Number: 4029-096

» More Information on Texas Wildfires

AUSTIN, Texas -- More than 80 percent of wildfires in Texas now strike within two miles of suburban communities. What’s more, the desire to live closer to nature has driven many Texans out of major cities and into areas where neighborhoods meet and mix with undeveloped, natural landscapes.

In these areas, called the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), homes press against and sometimes blend with wild expanses of explosively flammable plants, shrubs and trees.

Texans living in the WUI often enjoy the luxuries associated with wildland living, including beautiful views and a close proximity to wildlife and the outdoors. However, with this move to the WUI come new and dangerous fire risks.

With the state’s relentless drought conditions forecast to continue well into next year, it is important that Texans be aware of wildfire vulnerabilities in their area, and that they take steps to protect their homes and families – creating safer, stronger and smarter communities that are ready in the event of a wildfire.

Now, more than ever, is the time to educate Texans and build more “firewise” communities, say officials with the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“Living in the Wildland Urban Interface is much like living in a floodplain,” said Kevin L. Hannes, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer for two wildfire recovery missions in Texas. “Texans should know what risks exist related to their location and they should adopt safety measures to protect their families and their homes.”

TDEM and FEMA encourage homeowners and residents to stay up-to-date with fire situations in their area and take necessary precautions to prepare for and mitigate against the risk of future wildfires.

Here are five helpful mitigation tips to protect homes from wildfires:

Wooden fences and decks act like a fuse during a wildfire. Consider replacing them with less combustible material.

Fine fuels like dead grass and leaves can act as kindling. Remove them from the area directly around your home.

Embers are the primary source of home ignition. Make sure vents are adequately screened to prevent access.

Trim all the dead branches from trees in the yard and prune low hanging limbs to prevent fire from climbing to the crowns of the trees.

Replace the combustible components of homes with less flammable material like masonry or stone. Use fire-resistant roofing material, such as ceramic or slate tile, or standing-seam metal roofing.

FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

Yesertday monring, the aerial ladder of the Aliquippa FD (Beaver County, PA near Pittsburgh) collapsed while operating at the scene of a commercial fire. 1 Firefighter was injured but the injuries are reported to be non-life threatening. The fire was reported at Januks Auto Repair business in Aliquippa and first in companies reported fire through the roof.
While unconfirmed, it appears the apparatus is a 1976 American-LaFrance 100' aerial that was very recently inspected (2011) and that the AFD was expecting delivery of their new truck this month. We'll post more on the FF's condition and the collapsed rig on our home page as it becomes available.

The SCBA that a Tulsa firefighter was wearing when he collapsed while battling a suspicious house fire is being examined.

The hose that locks the mask into place is the focus of the investigation, Tulsa Fire Department Spokesman Stan May told KOTV.

Firefighter James O'Neal was unresponsive when he was rescued from the house on Saturday. He was revived at the scene by paramedics.

On Tuesday, he spoke to his family but remained in intensive care.

"The mask is designed to withstand about 1200 or 1300 degrees," May told reporters. "We're trying to see if maybe one of the locks broke or why it came loose or if that's even the piece that came loose..."

But, he added that it may have gotten snagged on something or that possibly O'Neal pulled it off and was unable to get it back on.

A reward of $3,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for setting the fire.

To All,

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) announced today there were 81 on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States as a result of incidents that occurred in 2011. This represents an almost seven percent decrease from the 87 fatalities reported for 2010. The 81 fatalities occurred in 33 states, one U.S. territory, and one overseas U.S. military facility. Texas experienced the highest number of fatalities (seven). North Carolina experienced six firefighter deaths and was the only other state with five or more firefighter fatalities.
"In 2004 at the initial Life Safety Summit, a number of fire service leaders did not believe we would complete a calendar year with less than 100 firefighter on-duty deaths," U.S. Fire Administrator Chief Ernie Mitchell said. "We broke through that perceived barrier in 2009, 2010, and now in 2011! We salute and congratulate our fire service family and pledge to continue working closely with the entire fire service community and its partners to maintain and even accelerate this downward trend in on-duty firefighter deaths."
Heart attacks were responsible for the deaths of 48 firefighters (59%) in 2011, nearly the same proportion of firefighter deaths from heart attack or stroke (60%) in 2010. Ten on-duty firefighters died in association with wildland fires, the lowest number of annual firefighter deaths associated with wildland fires since 1996. Fifty-four percent of all firefighter fatalities occurred while performing emergency duties. Only three firefighters were killed in vehicle collisions.
2011 firefighter fatality statistics are provisional and may change as the USFA contacts State Fire Marshals to verify the names of firefighters reported to have died on duty during 2011. The final number of firefighter fatalities will be reported in USFA's annual firefighter fatality report, expected to be available by July 2012.
For additional information on firefighter fatalities, including the annual fatality reports from 1986 through 2010 and the Firefighter Fatality Retrospective Study 1990-2000, please visit the USFA website.

That Texas Firefighter/Paramedic who received severe injuries including the loss of her arm remains in the hospital. Last week, November 24, FF Kimberly Huckabee, 30, was directing traffic around a large truck after it crashed and burst into flames. While she was directing traffic an 18-wheeler backed into her. The driver of the rig has been cited. FF/PM Huckabee received severe injuries to her left side and Doctors had to amputate her left arm but her fingers on the other hand/arm were saved. Huckabee remains in the ICU of a Beaumont hospital. With just a month away from receiving her nursing degree, her life, like other Firefighters who have been critically injured in the line of duty, has been dramatically altered and our help is needed.

SOUR LAKE, Texas — A firefighter lost her left arm in an accident while working at the scene of a semitrailer crash in Texas on Thursday.

Kimberly Huckabee, a Pinewood volunteer firefighter, had her arm amputated in surgery at the hospital after being struck by another vehicle while she was helping to direct traffic, according to reports. Doctors were able to reconnect fingers that had been severed from her right hand.

Traffic on the road was shut down after the incident, and about 6,700 gallons of crude oil in the tanker were allowed to burn out, according to The Associated Press.

A 52-year-old South King Fire & Rescue Firefighter was struck by a car and critically injured this morning. It happened while operating at a previous collision on Interstate 5 in Federal Way, south of Seattle, in Washington State,

The Firefighter was unconscious when he was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he is listed in critical but stable condition. He suffered severe head and face injuries, collapsed lung and fractures.

The incident happened at 0530 hours on the Interstate, just south of South 272nd Street in Federal Way. It appears that slick roads, fog and speed were factors in the crash that injured the firefighter, and booze or drugs were not factors-though the investigation is ongoing.

Just prior, at 0500 hours, a black pick-up traveling southbound on I-5 hit the left barrier and rolled over, coming to rest in the right shoulder. Turns out that the truck's two occupants were not injured and had left the scene. South King Fire & Rescue dispatched a company of 2 Firefighters and their Lieutenant to the scene. While they were sizing up the roll-over crash, a red Chevy in one of the left-hand southbound lanes lost control and skidded into the right shoulder. The Chevy struck the 52-year-old firefighter and narrowly missed the other firefighter and Lieutenant.

A City of Miami (Florida) Firefighter is "okay" after he was robbed at gunpoint while on the job. Around noon yesterday, the Firefighter in uniform, was flushing out a hydrant line and as he was walked back to the fire house about a block away, he was approached from behind by a man in a ski mask - carrying a semi-automatic weapon. The gunman then demanded a chain hanging around the firefighter's neck.

The Firefighter took off the chain and threw it at him. The subject then started to reach for it, at that time the Firefighter saw an opportunity to try and get away when the dirt bag yelled at him - and following the yell, he started shooting at him. The armed man fired 3 shots at the Firefighter but missed.

Cops set up a perimeter and SWAT teams searched the surrounding area. The bad guy has not yet been found.

The same Firefighter also narrowly avoided being shot, while on duty in 2006 after a random shooting broke out in front of the fire house. In that previous incident a bullet came flying through the station door and it just missed that firefighter by inches, lodging itself in the door of a fire truck. Despite that first close encounter, the Firefighter chose to remain at Station 12, serving the "Model City" neighborhood for the last 12 years.

Fire Service Mourns Loss of Legend, Leader Hal Bruno

The fire service has lost one of its finest champions in the passing of Hal Bruno, a firefighter for more than 60 years, a renowned columnist and most recently the chairman emeritus of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). He died Tuesday evening at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., from complications from a fall he had taken on Friday (Nov. 4). He was 83.

"Hal Bruno has been phenomenal in his support for the fire service," said Ron Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF in an early morning interview with Firehouse.com. "He has been instrumental in getting the fire service where it is today."

As of early this morning, funeral services were being arranged by the family and Siarnicki said the NFFF would organize its own tribute "within then the next couple of days."

For the past 10 years, Siarnicki has worked "side by side" with Bruno on many of the initiatives the NFFF has taken, notably with the annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.

"He was just an amazing guy," Siarnicki said, noting that it was Bruno who hired him as the foundation's executive director 10 years ago.

He was a native of Chicago and had a 60-plus year career in journalism retiring in 1999 from ABC News where he was political director and host of the weekly talk show "Hal Bruno's Washington." He was a frequent television political panelist and covered every national election since 1960.

Bruno combined his love of journalism and his passion for the fire service by becoming one of the original contributing editors for Firehouse magazine since its founding in 1976, having published countless articles in print and on line with Firehouse.com reflecting on the state of the fire service and personal observations from more than half a century in the fire service. He drew upon his experiences as a director of the Chevy Chase, Md. Fire Department and as chairman of the NFFF.

Bruno was appointed chairman of the NFFF in 1999, a distinction he held until his retirement in 2008. During that time, according to the NFFF, Bruno expanded services and resources for survivors, including workshops, conferences and scholarships. He also developed safety initiatives for firefighters and advanced safe practices to help reduce the number of line of duty deaths and injuries.

That passion for safety was something Siarnicki saw firsthand while on the job in Prince George's County, Md. Siarnicki, who later served as chief of the department, said this morning that he worked on a fire sprinkler initiative in Prince George's county after a tragic house fire in which several children perished. That tragedy sparked a two-page spread in the Washington Post newspaper that helped advance the cause of residential sprinklers, Siarnicki said.

As a result of that article, Hal became aware of Siarnicki's, and Prince George's county's efforts, and wrote a column about it for Firehouse Magazine. This began the long term relationship between the two.

"He was an amazing guy who took that tragedy and made something good from it," Siarnicki said.

Siarnicki shared a humorous story about how he got the job with NFFF and how Bruno offered it to him.

After seeing an advertisement for the position in Firehouse magazine, Siarnicki said he decided to apply for the post "just to see what it was like to look for a job."

"I had been chief of Prince George (Md.) for 26 years and I thought it was time to at least start looking for something else," he said. "I hadn't even had so much as an interview in all those years."

So he sent the application to NFFF and a couple of weeks later, Bruno called him.

"He asked me if I was serious about the application," Siarnicki said, adding that he had send the application mostly for practice in case the day came when it was time to do something different. "He laughed and then told me the job was mine if I wanted it."

That was 10 years ago and Siarnicki said it was a privileged to work with Bruno on something he is also passionate about.

Many in the fire service recognized Bruno for his work on behalf of the fire service and he was honored with many awards over the years. Among them were the National Fire & Emergency Services Hall of Legends, Legacies and Leaders Award which he received in October; the Congressional Fire Services Institute Board of Directors recipient of the 2008 CFSI/Motorola Mason Lankford Fire Service Leadership Award

In 1999 he received the "President's Award" from the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He was named "Fire Service Person of the Year" by the Congressional Fire Services Institute in 1995 and in 2009 he received the Fire Buff of the Year Award from the International Fire Buff Associates. He is also a 2008 inductee of the Washington, D.C., Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame.

Dave Statter, the public relations person for the NFFF said early this morning that Bruno was a "friend to all firefighters" and "a truly remarkable man." Statter said he had the delight to interview Bruno during the NFFF memorial weekend in 2009 and he's pleased that he filmed it to share with others.

In that video, Bruno recalled his work with NFFF and how the memorial has evolved. He recalled how the first few were just small gatherings on the grounds and how they became much larger and attracting Presidents of the United States on occasions.

"It would [become] a source of comfort for the families," Bruno said in the 2009 interview. "That was the intent and everything we did was for the families."

Bruno's family include his wife Meg, two sons, Harold and Daniel and their wives Brenda and Susan, four grandchildren and his sister Barbara.

And one million career and volunteer firefighters from coast to coast who are all part of the greater family of the fire service.

Funeral services are expected to be announced today and Firehouse.com will announce them as soon as they become available. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has posted a tribute to Bruno on its web site and it too will announce services when they are available.

A northern Ohio Firefighter who reportedly pulled up on a crash this
morning at Fulton-Lucas County Line Road and US 20, was struck by a
car, as she assisted those involved. Originally, a van was westbound
on US 20 at Fulton-Lucas County Line Road (near Toledo) when it was
rear-ended by a semi truck. The Firefighter, from Richfield Township,
came upon the wreck and, doing what most any FF would do, exited her
vehicle to help assist. As she did so, she was struck by a vehicle and
thrown to the side of the road. The Firefighter was wearing a
reflective vest when she was struck. She was taken to Mercy St.
Vincent Medical Center with life threatening injuries-we will keep you
advised. Keep the RTFD Officers and members, her and her family in
your thoughts.

Four Columbus firefighters were trapped last night on the second floor of a Hilltop house, requiring two of them to break a window and jump to safety.

Those two firefighters were treated late last night at Ohio State University Medical Center for burns on their heads, necks and hands, as well as possible injuries from the jump, said Fire Division Battalion Chief Doug Smith. The injuries weren't life-threatening, he said.

The other two firefighters dived down a staircase to get out the front door of the house at 125 Whitethorne Ave., Smith said. They were treated at the scene.

Smith wouldn't release any of their names last night.

When firefighters arrived around 8:20 p.m., there was heavy fire on the first floor. Firefighters went inside, initially thinking the resident was home, but Smith said she wasn't.

The firefighters who were searching the second floor got caught in a "flashover," Smith said, which happens when layers of hot smoke cause temperatures to suddenly rise, sometimes by 300 to 600 degrees.

Even with protective gear, it is too hot for firefighters to stay inside, Smith said. Two firefighters broke the window and jumped 20 feet onto a driveway.

The inside of the two-story house was gutted. Smith said investigators are trying to determine the fire's cause. He said it's believed the fire started on the first floor.

The owner of a former furniture factory that was destroyed by a fire in early December, has now sued the Union City (PA) Fire Department, claiming that "proper efforts" weren't made to save the 210,000-square-foot structure. Hmmmmmm. In the suit, which was filed last Friday, Carl Boone claims that firefighters did not "act with a sense of urgency" in fighting the Dec. 2 fire at the former Cherry Hill Division of Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. Boone said that a fire-suppression system in the building, which the Union City VFD was made aware of during a tour in November, was not charged and operated by firefighters who responded to the fire. His lawsuit also claims the fire department's command also directed other responding departments to not provide "adequate fire protection services-despite their willingness to fight the fire". "There was a pre-determined decision by the Union City FD that if the building ever caught on fire, Union City Firefighters would not attempt to extinguish the fire but would instead operate as a 'controlled burn structure fire,'" the suit claims. That isn't all that unusual - since many FD's are not provided with adequate resources to protect what they are expected to protect...amongst other issues....including FD leadership being able to explain what is needed, well before the building is on fire.

25 fire departments from throughout the area were called in to fight the fire, which is indicitive that command DID try to control the fire, which was reported at about 1140 hours on Dec. 2. Union City Fire Chief Robert Wolf said on the day of the fire that it had gotten such a head start by the time the first firefighters arrived that when crews made their first entry into the building, they encountered heavy flames and were pulled out. The massive fire was predictably fueled in part by decades of sawdust that packed itself into walls and between floors. The fire burned for most of the day, leveling the building and producing heat that damaged some homes on a street along the south exposure of the 1.95-acre property. The suit also alleges that the fire was set off by two people who were cutting metal with a blowtorch on the second floor of the building. The unnamed individuals were "not authorized" to be in the building, and it is believed that they were stealing metal to sell as scrap, according to the suit. However, fire investigators said after the fire that workers using torches accidentally set off the fire. Much more on this latest fire related lawsuit to follow.

An 18-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed last night by fire rescue apparatus in Winter Park, Florida.
The apparatus driver was not at fault and was turning into the hospital when the bicyclist lost control and fell under the truck. The apparatus was headed to the hospital, and the bicyclist was travelling alongside the truck, on the inside of the right lane. The fire apparatus driver put on its turn signal to make the right hand turn, the bike didn't have any brakes so the rider sped up and tried to pass the truck to avoid being hit. A witness said that it looked like the man on the bike tried to outrun the apparatus when he lost control and fell to the ground. "The tires slipped out from underneath the bike and he went right underneath the truck." When the bicyclist realized that wasn't going to happen, he made the turn at 20 mph so fast that the the bike just slipped out underneath him-he lost control of the bicycle, went down actually slid under the apparatus which actually ran over him. FHP said the Firefighter won't face any charges because the bicyclist was at fault - but it's still a real tough one for the FF.

As you have seen on the below video link, several Ohio Firefighters were fortunate after a smoke explosion at a downtown commercial building fire. The Franklin (Warren County, OH) Firefighters responded Monday to that fire at the P-H Bistro restaurant between Cincinnati and Dayton, right off I-75. The owner, who lived upstairs was sleeping at the time, escaped.
===NOTE-The Fire Officer of the crew who entered determined they needed to immediately get out based upon interior conditions-and they we on their way out (you can see the first FF exiting) when the smoke explosion pushed them out. At that point, the IC (shift commander) and the engine crew of 4 were the only companies on the scene (the Chief of Department had just arrived when it exploded) -with the balance of the full first alarm still enroute from Franklin as well as auto-mutual aid companies.

Thankfully, none of the firefighters or onlookers were injured. The fire destroyed the historic restaurant which has been around since the 1930's. It also damaged two other buildings. More to follow.

On Oct 5th, at 0931 hours, the Huntingtown VFD's Engine 62 and Tanker 6 were alerted for the house fire located directly behind St Leonard VFD. Units from the St Leonard VFD arrived on location with heavy fire showing from a split-foyer dwelling. A Working Fire Dispatch was sounded bringing a 3rd crew responding on Huntingtown Squad 6.

Huntingtown Engine 62 arrived on location, laid 1,000 feet of 3" from a hydrant and advanced an attack line to the rear of the residence to assist with extinguishing the fire. During the process, Firefighter Michael Montgomery Jr of Huntingtown partially fell through the floor causing 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his right leg. He was air-lifted to Med Star (Washington, DC) and is currently admitted to the Burn Unit. The Chief of the Department, Assistant Chief and a handful of other members are bedside with Michael Montgomery Jr along with the DCFD Burn Foundation. It is anticipated that in the next few days, FF Montgomery will undergo surgery and possible skin grafts. The leadership and membership of the Huntingtown VFD ask that you keep the Montgomery family in your thoughts and prayers-and we certainly will.

Two Flower Mound firefighters who had a brush with death this summer are telling other firefighters not to wait to ask for help.

Capt. John Wright and Firefighter Gus Trujillo nearly died while battling a house fire in June while searching the second floor of the home after the report of a possible entrapment, according to KXAS-TV.

Conditions quickly worsened and the two men were unable to find their way out.

"I've had a few close calls in my career but never thought, 'I'm dead. This is it,'" Wright told the news station.

He reached for his radio and called a Mayday.

That was the first time the distress call had been used by one of the department's members.

Firefighters rushed into the house while they began looking for another way out.

"The only thing I could hear is my heartbeat," Trujillo said. "I could hear the radio traffic 100 miles away, and you're in the zone, pretty much. I can't explain it."

The two men located two small windows and pounded on them until they broke.

Trujillo climbed onto the roof, but his partner was unable to make it out after his air pack became caught on the window frame.

Wright said he was close to giving up all hope, but Trujillo tried to rescue him from the roof, pulling his body through the frame.

He finally made it out and the two made it down to safety.

Both men were burned and Wright was left with a reminder of what happened that day. Trujillo's handprint was burned into his wrist where he grabbed him.

"I'd have died for sure if he hadn't done that," Wright said.

The two firefighters are back at work and want to share their story with others across the country.

On the call, Rebecca Bryan told police the intruder apologized for the shooting and added: "Your husband should have hired me."

But a search of the Bryan's home uncovered a handgun in a dryer that Brown said police linked to a slug taken from a couch where Keith Bryan's body was located. The utility room where the dryer was located was not near the garage door entrance where Rebecca Bryan told police the intruder entered the home, Brown said.

Police also discovered a box for the handgun under the couple's mattress, Brown said.

Brown did not discuss a possible motive. Court records show Rebecca Bryan filed for divorce from her husband in January 2010, citing irreconcilable incompatibility, but there had been no further action taken in the case. The couple had two adult sons, Brown said.

Canadian County jail officials said there is no record of an attorney being assigned to the case. A telephone message left with Rebecca Bryan's attorney in the divorce case was not immediately returned.

Mustang, with a population of nearly 18,500, is surrounded by southwestern Oklahoma City.

The assistance Texas Firewalkers provides to local residents that are displaced due by residential fires will stretch further than just the Bastrop Complex and Union Chapel fire.

A Baltimore City Firefighter was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center shortly after noon today after he fell off a fire apparatus that was turning a corner while responding to a box alarm.

NOTE: Chief Kevin Cartwright, the FD PIO said that Truck Company No. 12 member had been in the cab of the truck and wore a seat belt, and that an investigation was now underway to determine how and why he fell out. He suffered injuries to his head and elbow, including lacerations, and was taken to Shock Trauma as a precaution as the Firefighter did not appear to have fractures or life-threatening injuries. Updates will follow.

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Firefighters attempting to help the victim of a hit-and-run accident instead were attacked by a 43-year-old Hayward man, who stripped naked and ran into the street, yelling obscenities, throwing punches and climbing on a fire truck before being subdued and held for arriving police.

Fire officials said they received a call about a bicyclist being struck by a car around 7:20 p.m. Thursday, but when they arrived, nobody was in the area. A short time later, they got a call from a home on the 300 block of Lion Street saying the accident victim was there.

When fire personnel asked him to lift his shirt so they could see his injuries, he stripped down to his shoes and ran outside.

"Firefighters realized by the look in his eyes that he was on something," fire Capt. Thor Poulsen said.

The man started climbing on the fire equipment and blocking traffic, attracting a number of spectators, then struck firefighters trying to restrain him. Two were hit but sustained no serious injury. They were able to hold him down until police arrived.

He was taken to the hospital and faces assault charges. Police said it was determined that the man had been under the influence of PCP.

With this summer's extreme heat in most of the country, and many areas experiencing triple digit temperatures, it is essential that you - and all of the fire service working in it - take care. Hydration before dehydration is key: do not allow yourself or those responding with you to place yourself at risk for heat related illness. Also, keep a lookout for your fellow firefighters.

Another critical function that needs to be established in this heat wave is emergency incident rehabilitation. Emergency incident rehabilitation is designed to ensure that the physical and mental well-being of firefighters and other emergency responders operating at the scene of an emergency does not deteriorate to the point where it affects their safety. It can prevent serious and life-threatening conditions such as heat stroke and heart attacks from occurring. Rehabilitation is not just for incidents, it is also a must for operational training.

Fire departments should be in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1584 Standard on the Rehabilitation of Members Operating at Incident Scene Operations and Training Exercises.

USFA has resources to assist you and your department in establishing an effective emergency incident rehabilitation program, including a comprehensive guide on Emergency Incident Rehabilitation (PDF, 5.6 Mb) which was developed through a partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Additionally, the USFA website provides comprehensive information on this topic.

Please take some time to review these resources. USFA remains committed to the health and safety of firefighters, operating in any weather.

Four Houston County, Tenn. firefighters were arrested on July 22 in connection to arson fires that were set earlier this year -- including one that destroyed their own fire station.

Jeremy Mackens, 19, and Robert Taylor Richardson, 20, were charged in all nine blazes that occurred between March 21 and July 19 while Michael Brooks and Daryl Buttons, both 20 year old, were charged in only the first fire set at a barn, according to The Stewart Houston Times

Makens and Richardson were held in Houston County Jail on bonds of $90,000 each while Brooks and Buttons were freed on bonds of $500 and $1,000 respectively.

Each of the suspects had been with the department for about two years.

The biggest fire that Makens and Richardson were connected to occurred at their own department's fire station in McKinnon, which destroyed the structure and two fire trucks on March 28 and caused damages exceeding $100,000.

Houston County Fire Chief David Hardin said addressed the entire department after the arrests were made public and said that the firefighters were "extremely let down" after learning that fellow firefighters set the blazes.

"It's like being kicked in the gut," he told the newspaper. "We know it's a mark on (the department) which we'll work to overcome. We still have a lot of excellent people working for us."

He said that he has talked to the young men and that they are "very remorseful and haven't quite grasped the seriousness of what they did."

Houston County Sheriff Darrell Allison said all four suspects are well-known in the community and that they were either first to respond or one of the first to respond to several of the fires.

A member of the Fort Thomas Fire Department needed intravenous fluids later in the day.

A total of 45 firefighters from Fort Thomas, Newport, Bellevue-Dayton, Southgate and Wilder responded to the scene in the 90-degree weather.

"Had it not been for the heat, a couple of companies would have been able to handle this," said Fort Thomas Fire Department Capt. Greg Schultz.

Firefighters were only able to stay inside the burning building for 10 minutes at a time before having to cool off.

The cause hasn't been determined. No damage estimate has been released.

The fire was reported around 10:30 a.m. in a two-story residence.

Neighbor Catherine Amberg said she first knew there was a problem when her dog began barking and she saw someone banging on the window of the house on fire.

Capt. Schultz said the fire was so intense that it was difficult to get to the second floor and ventilate the roof.

"We were getting pretty near flashover," he said. "In fact, we evacuated our guys from the building at one point in time because we just got uncomfortable that we were going to have a flashover."

After taking their turns inside, firefighters pulled off their protective equipment, sat in shady areas, drank fluids and were checked by paramedics before being allowed to resume their duties.

According to Capt. Schultz, their core body temperature on the men was in the range of 105 to 110 degrees.

"That is why they're getting worn down so quickly," he said. "They're nearing total exhaustion in 15 minutes and it takes an hour to get them back."

Capt. Schultz said most firefighters want to push on get the job done, even if they're tired.

That can cause problems.

"Fifty percent of the 110-120 firefighters that die every year die from cardiac or stroke issues because they pushed on when they shouldn't have," said Capt. Schultz.

Many Indiana Avenue residents gave water and ice to firefighters who were in the recovery area.

Amberg said she wasn't surprised by those acts of kindness.

"We always take care of each other's kids and help each other out whenever they need it," she said. "It's a good street to live on."

Fort Thomas Police Lt. Rich Whitford called the residents "awesome."

"They're opening their doors for us," he said. They're bringing Gatorade, water and wet towels to try to help the firefighters."

July 18--Buffalo firefighters have brought under control a three-alarm industrial fire at a titanium recycling plant in the city's Clinton-Babcock-Bailey area.

Firefighters responded to a 7:47 a.m. hazardous-materials call today at 105 Dorothy St., the home of Goldman Titanium.

"This fire is going to burn for a while, but it's under control, and it's localized," Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr. said at the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Fire officials today explained why fires involving titanium are so tricky to fight.

"You can't use water on it, basically because it reacts violently with titanium," Whitfield said.

Firefighters also were plagued by a shortage of foam needed to battle the fire, because much of the department's supply was exhausted in fighting the four-alarm fire last week at the Niagara Lubricants building in Black Rock.

"We had some foam [remaining]," Whitfield said. "We just didn't have enough."

So shortly after this morning's fire was reported, fire officials contacted their vendor, and more foam was brought to the scene.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing several loud explosions. While there was some concern about propane tanks at a nearby building, Whitfield said he believed the explosions were caused by reactions between water and titanium.

Those concerns forced emergency workers to stop residents in a small residential area near the plant from returning to their homes at mid-morning.

There also were unconfirmed reports that two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital.

Today's fire was believed to be at least the fifth such incident in the facility since the mid-1990s, according to fire officials.

When a fire erupted in the Fillmore District facility in April, block club leaders demanded that Goldman Titanium prove that steps are being taken to prevent future blazes.

Mary L. Taber, president of the Clinton-Bailey Community Association, said she met at length with a company executive, who promised to get back to her in 30 to 60 days to discuss steps that are being taken to prevent future fires. That was three months ago, she said.

"It ticks me off," Taber told The Buffalo News today. "[Goldman Titanium] was supposed to get back to me to explain more about how they would prevent this type of thing from happening."

Arthur Robinson Jr., president of the Seneca-Babcock Block Club, said he remains convinced that the titanium recycling plant is a menace to the community and should not be operating at its current site. Robinson said the company's offer this spring to give concerned block club presidents a tour of the plant never materialized.

"They never contacted me once," Robinson said.

Company President Gary Greenfield told The News that unlike previous fires, today's fire started outside the plant. He said the cause is still under investigation. A damage estimate has not been released.

Greenfield said numerous steps have been taken in the recent past to prevent fire hazards, but that most of the actions involved interior improvements.

"This [fire] was a shocker," Greenfield said. "We're going to have to consider a new game plan [for the exterior]."

Greenfield said he had not been in contact with block club leaders, because he wanted to complete more work rather than coming to them with a "partial" list of safety improvements.

While the cause of today's fire remains under investigation, both Robinson and Taber said they wonder whether the company had taken the preventive steps that it promised to take.

"This fire would indicate that maybe they hadn't taken any precautions," Robinson said.

The company occupies about 150,000 square feet of space in two buildings that are situated on five acres of land. It purchases titanium scrap from around the world, then recycles it and sells it to customers for various uses.

The Dorothy Street plant is south of Clinton Street, between Babcock Street and Bailey Avenue. The nearby one-block streets include Gilbert Street, Scoville Avenue, Baitz Avenue, Kirkover Street, Hobart Street and Hubbard Street.

A Trinity County volunteer fire department was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.

"It's gone, but we'll rebuild," said Jerry Caldwell, volunteer first responder with the 356 Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire was called in by a passerby just after midnight. The fire chief and his wife got a call from the sheriff's office just after 12:30 A.M. Sunday morning.

"Se told me that our fire station was on fire," said Regina Baker.

Onalaska and Trinity Fire Departments responded to the blaze. Witnesses say the building on F.M. 356 was already engulfed by flames when fire-fighters arrived.

Fire Chief Jesse Baker said it felt like forever before they got there.

"It was heartbreaking to sit there and watch your fire station burn, and you can't do anything because you don't have water to put on it. There's no way to do anything to stop it," said Baker.

V.F.D. members say it took almost three hours to extinguish the fire. The chief says everything was destroyed with losses estimated around $400,000.

"We lost 2 brush trucks, a rescue truck and a tanker truck," said Baker.

Rebuilding won't be as easy as giving the insurance company a call since the fire chief says they don't have any. They'll be starting completely over.

"We're just going to have to count on our public to help and county on any help that we can get, anywhere we can get it," said Baker.

The fire chief says this fire is a true testament to how critical the fire danger is here in East Texas.

If you are interested in helping out the 356 Volunteer Fire Department you can email Regina Baker at baker.regine@gmail.com or call 936-662-2985.

The fire marshal is supposed to investigate the scene tomorrow morning to determine a cause for the fire.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Several off-duty police and fire personnel were proclaimed heroes Saturday when they rescued two people from a house fire less than a block from the Sorrento Cheese Italian Heritage Festival in North Buffalo.

Authorities were still trying to sort through the details Saturday, but here's what happened, according to several people on the scene:

Off-duty officers stationed at Crestwood and Hertel avenues while working private security at the festival radioed for help when they spotted smoke coming from the home at 63 Crestwood.

"They run down the street to the house and start to inquire if anyone is in there," said Jeffrey Rinaldo, a Buffalo police detective in charge of festival security.

"When we got to the house there were heavy fire conditions on the second floor," added Ed Ortiz, a Buffalo fire marshal, who was one of the rescuers. "There were some people across the street yelling, 'I think there are some people in there!' "

One woman made it out of the house on her own.

Rescuers — including off-duty Buffalo Police Officers Jason Sutter and Eric Hofschneider — then broke down a door and went through the thick, black smoke to retrieve another female in the upstairs apartment.

There was still another man trapped upstairs. Rescuers looked to get in by way of an upstairs porch.

"I ran out to the front of the house and this gentleman two houses away was painting a house," Ortiz said Saturday. "He was running toward us with a ladder."

As the rescuers brought the ladder around to the back, others — including Larry McDaniel of the Buffalo Fire Department — had already hoisted their way up to the porch to rescue the last person inside.

"He went in there and yanked him out," Ortiz said.

By that time, firefighters had arrived on the scene with equipment and were able to help get the victim down from the upstairs porch.

The victims were taken to Erie County Medical Center, but they did not appear to suffer any serious injuries, officials said.

"It was the right time at the right place," Ortiz said. "God was with us."

It is unclear exactly how many were at the scene to help, but the rescuers included: Sutter, Hofschneider, Ortiz, Rinaldo, Tom Cisela, a captain with the New York State courts; Eric Nikischer, a state courts officer; Ron Deschenes, a board member of the Italian Festival; and McDaniel, John Piegay and Alan Forcucci, all with the Buffalo Fire Department.

"Those guys are heroes," Rinaldo said.

Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield agreed.

"They did what they had to do," Whitfield said Saturday. "They were told by neighbors there were people in the building. They went in with no regard for themselves.

"On a daily basis, members of the department go above and beyond with no recognition and no pay," Whitfield said. "I think that's a pretty good story."

Blast at UK Vodka Still Kills Five Men

ILLEGAL vodka manufacture was being blamed last night for a huge explosion which killed five men.

A sixth man was taken to hospital with severe burns after the fireball blasted an industrial estate on Wednesday evening.

One resident said: "I heard a huge bang - it sounded like the world was coming to an end. It all went crazy.

There were firemen and ambulances everywhere."

A police spokesman said the "illicit production of spirits" could have been the cause but could not confirm "rumours" that vodka was being distilled. But neighbours yesterday said the operation of an illegal still on the site in Boston, Lincs, was an open secret among tenants of adjoining units.

Martial arts enthusiasts training at neighbouring premises claim to have seen a man fleeing from the unit on Wednesday naked and covered in flames.

Teams of emergency workers were scrambled to the 30ft by 15ft unit at the industrial estate after several 999 calls were received. Fire fighters found the injured man outside.

They were then forced to cut their way into the building with hydraulic equipment after intense heat had melted its doors.

Steve Moore, area manager from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, described the blast, which set a car alight outside, as one of the worst he had seen in his 28-year career.

"As far as the crews I have spoken to, it is the single greatest loss of life in fire in their experience, " he said.

Ian Nuttall, 42, who lives 200 yards away, said he saw smoke coming from the lock-up before the blast.

He added: "There was a rumour going round that it was some Polish nationals who have been brewing their own vodka which is a bit of a problem around here at the moment."

Tenants said they witnessed a large van arriving at the unit each day which was later driven away after apparently being loaded with bottles.

One, who asked not be named, said "There was a lot of money in it for them. But it wasn't worth it.

What happened was horrific. They will all have mother and fathers, brothers and sisters.

"I think everybody here knew what was going on but no-one said anything about it."

A group of men in their 20s, believed to be Lithuanians, were regular visitors to the unit usually arriving in a black Vauxhall Vectra with a man referred to as "the boss".

Richard Dilley, who runs a car radiator business, said: "It's a rogues' gallery down there. People knew what was going on.

"Only last week I smelled ammonia coming from there. It was like what you get with a stink bomb.

Everybody knew what was in there."

Supt Keith Owen of Lincolnshire Police said last night: "We have found chemicals in the premises which tend to indicate either the manufacture or production of alcohol.

"The focus of our investigation remains on identifying the five people who tragically lost their lives but a main part of the investigation will be inquiries into the unlawful production of alcohol.

"That does not appear to have been a huge operation but it is far too early to speculate."

He added: "Counterfeit alcohol has been a problem in the Boston area." Boston Central councillor Peter Bedford described the deaths as a "real shock".

He added: "We don't expect that kind of thing in Boston. It's a small market town."

Remington, 58, in the Line of Duty on Jan. 3, 2011 in Maine. The crash was investigated by the York County Sheriff's office.

Remington, a Shapleigh (Maine) Firefighter, was responding to a rescue call at about 2200 hours that night when he lost control of his personal vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck about one mile from Route 109, in Shapleigh. The truck rolled, struck two trees and came to rest on the passenger's side in a ditch. FF Remington was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and at some point he was ejected from his vehicle-he was DOA at the scene.

There was no evidence or indication that Remington was impaired at the time of the accident, nor was there evidence of mechanical failure. The accident was reconstructed by law enforcement who concluded that FF Remington had become distracted for some unknown reason while rounding a gradual corner. The vehicle was traveling between 59 and 67 mph when it left the road, in an area posted for 45 mph. FF Remington was a retired career Firefighter for the City of Portland and had been an active Volunteer Firefighter for the Shapleigh Fire Department for four years at the time of the accident.

Another tragic reminder about the critical and mandatory use of seat belts as well and controlling the vehicle-car, ambulance or apparatus when responding.

In many cases, they are successful, but in many other cases, they become victims themselves. Naturally, the goal would be to help people in trouble, without themselves (the PD) also getting in trouble, adding to the work we have already have to do.

The most recent example of that is in New Jersey. were a short in an electrical wire in a hallway ceiling caused a fire in an apartment building in Red Bank yesterday.
According to the RB Fire Marshal, the fire went undetected for about 45 minutes as the heat melted through a sprinkler pipe, which caused the roof ceiling of the bedroom to collapse, and the water from the pipe helped contain the fire.

Upon receipt of the fire call, 2 police officers went inside the apartment building looking for residents before the RB Firefighters arrived. Unfortunately but somewhat predictably, the police officers along with civilians became trapped by the heavy smoke conditions in the building. One police officer was able to get out of the building on his own, but a ceiling collapse trapped the second police officer in a second-floor apartment. Fortunately, Red Bank Firefighters arrived and raised a ladder to the second-floor window to get the other officer and civilians out of the building.

Another reminder to share with the law enforcement folks in any area, as well intentioned as any may be. And while you are sharing, you may wanna remind them of our burning desire to gain access and use hydrants at fires as well as our interest in accessing the fire block/street-so please park outta the way.
Just like the fire chief cars do.
Just say'n.
